History of Puch

Puch began in 1899 when Johann Puch established a small bicycle workshop in Graz, named “Fahrradfabrikation Strauchergasse 18a.” By 1901, engine production started, followed by motorcycles in 1903. In 1904, Puch entered automobile manufacturing, and in 1909, a Puch car set a world speed record at 130.4 km/h. By 1912, Johann retired as honorary president, with the company employing 1,100 workers and producing 16,000 bicycles and over 300 motorcycles and cars annually. In 1928, Puch merged with Austro-Daimler, and in 1934, it formed Steyr-Daimler-Puch. During World War II, it shifted to arms production. Post-war, Puch resumed bicycle and moped production. In 1957, the Puch 500 small car was introduced, and in 1969, the iconic Puch Maxi moped launched, selling 1.8 million units. In 1987, the motorcycle division was sold to Piaggio, and in 1997, the bicycle division joined Cycleurope. In 2011, Josef Faber took control, with production restarting in France in 2012. In 2024, Puch celebrated its 125th anniversary.
