History of Plaxton

Plaxton began in 1907 as a joinery workshop, later expanding into building contracting. Post-World War I, it produced charabanc bodies on Ford Model T chassis and car bodies for Rolls-Royce and Crossley in the 1920s. By the 1930s, it focused on coach bodies. The 1960s saw the Panorama Elite, with ~6,000 units produced. The Supreme replaced it in the 1970s. Facing challenges in the 1980s, Kirkby Bus & Coach acquired it in 1987. In 1989, Plaxton bought Duple’s coach rights for £4 million and acquired Henlys. Renamed Henlys Group in 1992, it purchased Northern Counties for £10 million in 1995. In 2000, it joined Mayflower in TransBus International. After TransBus’s 2004 collapse, Plaxton became independent until joining Alexander Dennis in 2007. In 2019, NFI Group acquired Alexander Dennis. In March 2024, coach production was suspended until 2026 to focus on electric buses. The 2023 revenue was ~£100 million, with ~660 employees.
