History of Piaggio

Piaggio began in 1884, crafting locomotives and carriages in Sestri Ponente, Genoa. During World War I, it produced aircraft, and in World War II, it built bombers. After its Pontedera factory was destroyed in 1945, Enrico Piaggio, son of the founder, shifted focus to affordable transport. In 1946, Piaggio launched the Vespa, designed by aeronautical engineer Corradino D’Ascanio, which became a postwar Italian symbol, selling 1 million units by 1956.
