Panoz began in 1989 when Dan Panoz, son of pharmaceutical magnate Don Panoz, founded the company after acquiring the rights to a chassis from the Irish Thompson Motor Company. The chassis, designed by renowned engineer Frank Costin, who worked with Maserati and Lotus, became the foundation for the 1992 Panoz Roadster, which revived the spirit of American sports cars. By 1995, the Panoz AIV Roadster, the first American aluminum-intensive vehicle, entered full production. In 1997, Panoz ventured into racing to promote its products, with the Esperante GTLM winning the GT2 class at the 2006 24 Hours of Le Mans. Panoz produces around 20-30 cars annually, with a total production of approximately 300 vehicles by 2020.
