History of Optare

Optare was founded in 1985 when former employees of Leyland Bus acquired the bus bodybuilding operations after the closure of the Charles H. Roe plant in Leeds. Optare quickly evolved into a pioneer of lightweight bus designs, focusing on efficiency and sustainability. In 2008, it merged with Darwen Group, becoming a listed company on the London Stock Exchange as Optare plc. By 2010, Ashok Leyland acquired a stake, increasing it to 99% by 2018. In November 2020, Optare was rebranded as Switch Mobility to reflect its focus on electric buses, though the Optare name continues for its products. With over a century of expertise, Optare has delivered over 12,000 vehicles and earned 10 awards for excellence.
